Sesshomaru was likened to snow by those who dared speak of him at all: cold, feather-light, deadly. His aura, Father once said, was the frigid breath of winter.

The morning was gray, still blanketed by clouds. The night before, after leaving the priestess in the moon-viewing pavilion and seeking the darkness of his chamber, he'd caught the scent of ice, and in the morning the garden was left with a dusting of cherry blossoms that stood out like snow against the plush green of the mossy garden. His instructions as to the robes Kagome would wear that day Sesshomaru would blame on that sudden, fleeting reminder of times past.

He was copying a chronicle on his father when she appeared at the door, lingering at the edge of the screen and peeking in.

He could have said something to put her at ease; he could have addressed the issue, made her more comfortable.

Backlit with the morning haze, Kagome's pale outer layers blended into transparency, the inner layers a hint of fallen plum blossoms. His fingers itched to peel them from her shoulders to see what lay beneath. Flesh like snow, her earthy feminine scent, and blood - she would not escape him without shedding that burden.

"Sesshomaru?"

The brush cracked in his grip. "Later," he said sharply.

He saw her quiver, and then she disappeared. An apparition.

Sesshomaru tossed the brush away, retrieved another, and bent to work. Words would replace the image and erase the temptation she represented.

Inspired by Dalby's pun on 'beneath the snow' in The Tale of Murasaki.

Writing with a guest sitting behind me makes me paranoid. I did edit, but if there are still issues, well-- apologies.
